Science Night 2025 – Discover the Baltic’s Nightlife with Us!
Science Night 2025 – Discover the Baltic’s Nightlife with Us!
18-09-2025

Join us on 26 September at the Sopot pier, where during the Pomeranian Science Night we will showcase the fascinating world of marine organisms. We will install underwater light sources to attract sea creatures, and an underwater camera will display them live on a large screen set up on the pier. Some organisms will be collected using dredges and plankton nets, then shown in tanks and under stereomicroscopes. The event will be enriched with stories from our marine ecology experts.

This is a unique opportunity to look into the depths of the Baltic Sea and discover its biodiversity up close.
Entrance to the pier during the event is free (ticket available below).

A Year After the Flood / Experts: Last Year’s Flood Did Not Significantly Affect the Baltic Sea
A Year After the Flood / Experts: Last Year’s Flood Did Not Significantly Affect the Baltic Sea

Last year’s flood on the Oder River, despite carrying various pollutants and a large amount of freshwater, did not have a lasting impact on the condition of the Baltic Sea. The sea can cope with floods, and the filtration provided by the Szczecin Lagoon also helped — say Prof. Jan Marcin Węsławski and Prof. Karol Kuliński from the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Sopot Science Picnic “Ocean of Change” 2025
12-09-2025

We warmly invite you to the Sopot Science Picnic “Ocean of Change” 2025.

The Sopot Science Picnic is an event for everyone who wants to better understand the marine environment and its relationship with humans.

The Picnic has a long tradition – it began in 2003 as part of the Baltic Science Festival. For the past 17 years, it has been held as an independent event organized by the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Sopot Scientific Society.

This year’s edition will take place on Saturday, 20 September, at the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot, 55 Powstańców Warszawy Street, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

In the square in front of the Institute, tents will be set up to present scientific and other activities in a friendly and engaging way. There will be many attractions prepared for both children and adults.

39th AREX Expedition: s/y Oceania back from the Arctic
39th AREX Expedition: s/y Oceania back from the Arctic
09-09-2025

Yesterday, at around 8:00 p.m., the research vessel s/y Oceania returned to her home port in Gdańsk, concluding the 39th edition of the annual ARctic EXpedition (AREX 2025).

AREX is a research program on the marine environment in the Arctic that has been carried out since 1987 – one of the longest-running in the European region. This year’s route included more than 300 measurement stations – from the Baltic Sea, through the Norwegian and Barents Seas, up to the western regions of Spitsbergen and the Fram Strait.

During the cruise, the team of IO PAN scientists conducted a wide range of studies: oceanographic and physical, atmospheric and optical, acoustic, biogeochemical, and biological.

The collected data will help to better monitor the impact of climate change on polar ecosystems, as well as improve models of the ocean, sea ice, and climate in the Arctic.

AREX is our contribution to the global ocean observation system and the long-term monitoring of the processes shaping the Earth’s climate.

Scientific Conference: “50th Anniversary of the First Antarctic Expedition of r/v Profesor Siedlecki and m/t Tazar (1975/1976) and New Perspectives for Polish Research in the Atlantic”
24-07-2025

On November 20–21, 2025, a scientific conference will be held in Gdynia and Sopot to commemorate one of the key events in the history of Polish marine and polar research — the first Antarctic research expedition of the vessels r/v Profesor Siedlecki and m/t Tazar in 1975/1976.

The event, organized by the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute, is part of the “HiPO” project, funded under the European Funds for Social Development 2021–2027 program (FEDR.04.01-IP.01-005/24).

The conference will provide an opportunity to present the latest results of oceanographic and fisheries research, discuss contemporary challenges facing science — such as climate change, overfishing, and marine ecosystem degradation — and reflect on the future of Poland’s research presence in the Atlantic and polar regions.

Participation in the conference is free of charge, but prior registration is required. The number of places is limited.
