We are pleased to announce that the newsletter of the Detect2Protect project, in which IO PAN participates, was published in October. Below is the foreword of the Project Coordinator.

Dear Friend of the Baltic Sea,
as the coordinator of the Detect2Protect project, funded by BIODIVERSA+ and national funding agencies, I am proud to present the 1st Project Newsletter to you. The full title of the project tells something about the goals of the project (“New approaches in determining the impacts of chemical pollution to protect the biodiversity of the Baltic Sea”) and detailed information is available at the Detect2Protect – Biodiversa+ website.

On behalf of the whole Detect2Protect consortium I very much hope you will enjoy reading the newsletter and find our work interesting. In case of questions please do not hesitate to turn to your national project partner (see website) or me.

Wishing you a beautiful Baltic Sea autumn,
Kari K. Lehtonen

SIOS Working Group Days
SIOS Working Group Days
02-10-2024

On October 8-10, 2024, we will be hosting the SIOS Working Group Days event at the Institute.
The organizers (SIOS KC, the Polish Polar Consortium, and the Institute of Oceanology PAS) invite interested participants to take part in the Open Session, which will be held on October 10th in the IO PAN Conference Hall from 9:00 to 10:30.

Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (SIOS) is an international partnership committed
to the development of an efficient Earth observing system in and around Svalbard.

SIOS has four main goals: (1) to make environmental data FAIR and share them through the SIOS data management system, (2) to share research infrastructure, (3) to decrease the environmental footprint by pooling resources and enabling the development of new technology, and (4) to strengthen interdisciplinary research collaboration.

In the session we will tell about SIOS, its activities, services and opportunities for its members.
We will also gather feedback from participants for our future work.

From September 24th to 26th, 2024, the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences will host a working meeting of teams operating Argo floats in the Baltic Sea and other shallow waters. Participants from Finland, Germany, and Denmark are expected to attend.

The workshop will focus on the following topics:

Day 1: Operation of Argo floats in shallow waters and coordination of activities in the Baltic Sea.
Day 2: Quality control of Argo data.
Day 3: Technical challenges associated with working in shallow waters and new ideas for using Argo floats.

We welcome all individuals interested in enhancing their knowledge of this cutting-edge research tool. Attendees are encouraged to collaborate, present their own data, and share methods for working with Argo floats and data.

The workshop is organized by the Argo-Poland consortium. Sessions will begin each day at 9:30 AM in the seminar rooms of the Institute.

5th International Symposium on the Advances in Marine Mussel Research
5th International Symposium on the Advances in Marine Mussel Research
18-08-2024

International Symposium on Advances in Marine Mussel Research are pleased to invite delegates to the 5th edition of the International Symposium on Advances in Marine Mussel Research (AMMR2024), from 18-21 September. Following on from the great success of AMMR2016 in Vigo (Spain), AMMR2017 in Sete (France), AMMR2019 in Chioggia (Italy), and AMMR2022 in Exeter (United Kingdom), this multidisciplinary, international meeting will take place in a beautiful town of Sopot at the Gulf of Gdańsk, overlooking the Baltic Sea.

This edition will be hosted by Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences gratiously sponsoring the event.

AMMR2024 offers a 3 day meeting that will celebrate the latest in marine mussel (Mytilus sp.) research. AMMR want this to be a truly interdisciplinary, cosmopolitan meeting, spanning sub-cellular and molecular to whole ecosystem function, encompassing fundamental blue-skies to entirely commercial research, stretching from the sub-littoral to the high inter-tidal. Just like the spread of these incredible bivalves, AMMR would also love to welcome researchers from across the globe. Previous iterations of AMMR have covered incredible research on evolutionary biology, ecology, ecotoxicology and climate change, as well as the role of mussels within aquaculture. This edition will have a special session devoted to mussel genetics, with the emphasis on mitochondrial inheritance system and transmissible cancer.
