MARBEFES project - BioBlitz event, Poland 2023
15-11-2023

BioBlitz - is a special event, where biologists are gathered in one place accessible to the public to identify as many as possible species within 24 hours. This is both important scientific data collected by professionals and a public event that shows how rich is the biodiversity even in the most trivial sites. Important observation is how many specialists one needs to identify all aorganisms - from uni cellular algae to bats and fish. No one knows all the species.

Within MARBEFES project we are going to organise such events in all of the four regions: Sopot (June 2023), Tromso (June 2024), Dublin and Sardinia (2025).

The first from the four planned MARBEFES BioBlitz actions was organized at the Baltic Sea shore in Sopot, Poland; altogether there were 37 scientists from diferent Institutions with diverse scientific backgroud involved in search and identification.

BGC Argo float launching
BGC Argo float launching
03-10-2023

The Institute of Oceanology PAN has been participating in the Euro-Argo program for years, launching Argo floats in the European Arctic and the Baltic Sea. On September 24, 2023, the Argo-Poland consortium, of which IO PAN is the leader, deployed Biogeochemical Argo (BGC Argo) (WMO 1902683) for the first time. It is a much more complicated device than a core float. In addition to standard CTD measurements, our BGC Argo measures four additional seawater properties:

  • dissolved oxygen concentration,
  • chlorophyll-a concentration,
  • irradiance
  • CDOM.

The float was deployed from the board of r/v Oceania in the Gdansk Deep. The device is the PROVOR type with the Iridium data transmission system. We invite everyone willing to cooperate.
